Proposal format descriptions for selling sickness 2013
We encourage submissions to Selling Sickness 2013 from all conference participants: academic research, consumer advocacy, or health journalism. Our focus is networking, interaction, solutions.
Deadline for submissions is OCTOBER 1, 2012.
Proposals will be reviewed by the Selling Sickness 2013 Program Review Committee, and acceptances mailed out by November 5, 2012.
All conference presenters must register for the conference.
Proposed sessions should be 90 minutes long, and may use any of the following four formats.
- Workshops
- Workshops involve participants in activities that raise awareness about disease-mongering or generate new strategies or policies. Workshops often begin with a brief check-in (who’s attending; what are their expectations) and then move to one or more well-planned and timed activities that divide the audience into subgroups with roles and tasks. Because they are experiential, workshops can be exciting and memorable aspects of a conference.
- You will be asked to provide a 300-word description of your workshop and activities and a 50-word abstract (for the conference program). Please note required tech. equipment.
- ORAL PRESENTATIONS
- Oral presentations (15-20 min.) present research, policy, history, or case examples that illuminate facets of disease-mongering. They can be focused and specific or offer an overview. Related talks will be combined by program organizers into themed sessions, and some will have assigned discussants.
- You will be asked to provide a 300-word description of your proposed talk and a 50-word abstract (for the conference program). Please note required tech. equipment.
- PANELS/STRUCTURED DISCUSSIONS
- Panels include 2-3 coordinated oral presentations approaching a subject from diverse but intersecting points of view. Each speaker presents for 15-20 minutes, allowing a minimum of 30 minutes for group discussion and participation.
- You will be asked to provide a 300-word abstract from each panel member as well as an overall description. Please also provide a 50-word abstract of your panel (for the conference program). Please note required tech. equipment.
- POSTER PRESENTATIONS
- Posters (handmade or commercially made) allow presenters to display ideas, research or case studies in no set format. They exhibit creativity and individuality. Each presenter is assigned a 3’ by 4’ cork bulletin board for their 90-minute session, with approximately 20 posters displayed during each poster session. Each presenter stands near their poster interacting with visitors. Presenters may give handouts.
- You will be asked to provide a 300-word description of your poster and a 50-word abstract (for the conference program). Pushpins will be provided to tack up posters.
